The call from God is heard within our hearts, if we listen attentively. Each one of us is called in some way to build the Kingdom of God. For Luke, healer and writer, the mission is to the Gentiles. What would have happened if he had ignored that call? Seven years ago and newly ordained, I presided at my first Eucharist on this feast day; no regrets although the harvest has not always been as bountiful as hoped for!

Introit Hymn: TIS 111 –Praise to the Lord the Almighty
The Sentence: The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; ask therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Luke 10:2
The Collect:
Almighty God,
who inspired your servant Luke the physician
to set forth in his gospel
the love and healing power of your Son:
graciously continue in your Church
this love and power to heal,
to the praise and glory of your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.
First Reading Jeremiah 8.22-9.3
A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah
Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of my poor people not been restored? O that my head were a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears, so that I might weep day and night for the slain of my poor people! O that I had in the desert a traveller’s lodging-place, that I might leave my people and go away from them! For they are all adulterers, a band of traitors. They bend their tongues like bows; they have grown strong in the land for falsehood, and not for truth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know me, says the Lord .
For the word of the Lord Thanks be to God
Psalm 145.10-18
10 All creation | praises you, O | Lord:
and your faithful | servants | bless your | name.
11 They speak of the | glory of your | kingdom:
and | tell of your | great | might,
12 That the whole earth may know your | mighty | acts:
and the glorious | splendour | of your | kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an ever -| lasting | kingdom:
and your dominion en -| dures through | all gener -| ations.
14 The Lord upholds all | those who | stumble:
and raises up | those that are | bowed | down.
15 The eyes of all look to | you in | hope:
and you give them their | food in | due | season;
16 You open | wide your | hand:
and fill all things | living with your | bounteous | gift.
17 The Lord is just in | all his | ways:
and | faithful in | all his | dealings.
†18 The Lord is near to all who | call u -| pon him:
to all who | call up-| on him in | truth.
Glo-| ry to | God; Father | Son and | Holy | Spirit;
As in the be-| ginning so | now; and for-| ever. | A-| men
Second Reading 2 Timothy 4.9-17a
A reading from Paul’s second letter to Timothy
Do your best to come to me soon, for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful in my ministry. I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will pay him back for his deeds. You so must beware of him, for he strongly opposed our message. At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
For the word of the Lord Thanks be to God

The Gospel Luke 10.1-9
The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke
X Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ
After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, “Peace to this house!” And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.”
For the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

Gracious God, we pray for our Parish of St Luke,
for our Acting Rector Philip and all who worship here.
At this time of change, we pray that this Parish

who will faithfully speak your word and minister your Sacraments;
an encourager who will equip your people for ministry and
enable us to fulfil our calling.
Give to those who will choose a new Rector,
wisdom, discernment and patience.
Give to us warm and generous hearts;
for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

St Luke’s Direct Transfer
If you want to ensure regular giving to St Luke’s, but find you never have the right amount in cash, or are sometimes unable to attend on Sundays, then St Luke’s Direct Transfer may work for you.
You can use your own name as a reference, but if you prefer, just use the word Offering as a reference and your name will remain anonymous. Your personal and banking details will not be given to St Luke’s.
Thank you to all who came and helped set up for the Wardens Indian Dinner yesterday morning and cleaned up last night. The night was a great success thanks to the Reddy Family, their relatives/friends and to all of you who came along and joined in the fun.
The flowers in church today are given by Ann Petersen in loving memory of her late husband, Peter Petersen and by Beth Armstrong in loving memory of her mother, Ruth Arthur.
Stephen Thomas is looking for shared accommodation, or a room in which to lodge while he considers his vocation to serve with the Franciscans. If you have a room or know of anyone who has, or you see one advertised within Enmore or the nearby precinct, please let Stephen know - mobile is 0473 164 017 and Stephen has references.
The Christmas Market Facebook is now up and running, so take a look and share it with your friends. We’d like as many “hits” as possible! This is non-cost advertising and we need to take advantage of it. The posters and flyers will be available soon for you to share with your neighbours, family and friends. Please make it known to all you meet and help towards the Market’s success. We are looking for helpers, bakers and raffle ticket sellers! If our bakers would like to get cheap eggs and flour, please put your names on the list in the hall. Kathy Drummond can get 20 eggs for $6.50 and plain (Manildra Baker’s flour) 5 kg for around $6.00.
Our Big Christmas Hamper Guessing Competition – we will have a box in the church foyer for your contributions to the Christmas Hamper! Anything from a packet of crackers to a bottle of wine would be great.
Our Carpark – please do not park other than in a line marked space. It inconveniences others and causes unnecessary conflict. Please drop off your passengers in the driveway and park in the Edgeware Road Carpark (get your ticket and display) or in the Cypriot Club carpark on Stanmore Road. We only have 13 car parking spaces and 2 disabled spaces; this means most people need to park elsewhere, especially if you are capable of walking more than 100m. Please leave parking spaces for those who are elderly and/or disabled.
A New Big Roster is ready today; it would have been emailed but if you want a hard copy please pick one up from the table in the hall foyer.
Toysn’ Tucker – Anglicare – During the month of November we will have boxes in the church foyer to receive your donations of toys and non-perishable food for the Christmas distributions to poor and needy families. The guidelines are basically, no chocolate or chocolate biscuits as they do not last in the heat and no toys should be reliant on batteries.
The Parish is also registered to help with donations of clothing and food when the flood of refugees arrives in Sydney. The Archbishop has set up a website where parishes register their name and what help they can give. More information will be provided later.
Tuesday 20 October 7.30 p.m. – Bible Study recommences.
Wednesday 28 October 7.30 p.m. – Women’s Reading Group meets at Pauline Newell’s home. See Ruth or Jo Burton if you would like to join us.
Monday 23 November at 7.00 p.m. – “Tears and Hope” Service at St John’s Darlinghurst. A service of healing for survivors of abuse. All welcome. This service has grown over the years from a handful of people to a huge crowd of people, whether the abuse happened in a church context or not. For more information call 9265 1500 - Catherine Wynn Jones – Chaplain, Professional Standards Unit, Sydney Diocese.

BEQUESTS
We have benefited greatly in the past from bequests left to the parish by parishioners who have included St Luke’s in their will. Some amounts left to the Parish have been large, some very small; all have been appreciated. The Wardens have elected to retain this capital and generally only use the interest as needed for various projects. If you would like to think about this and include St Luke’s in your will it is one way of ensuring the ongoing maintenance of this extraordinary parish.
