The celebration of the victory of life over death resounds throughout today’s readings. True life comes from true love. And God is at the source of all love. Through the ages, God has worked through myriad people, some of whom we acknowledge as saints. But this is the tip of the iceberg. Saints are all around us. Who are the saints in your life?

Introit Hymn: TIS 150 –Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones
The Sentence: And a great multitude, from every nation and tribe and people and language, cried with a loud voice, saying,
‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ Revelation 7.10
The Collect:
We praise you, heavenly Father, that you have knit together your chosen ones in one communion and fellowship in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who truly love you;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
First Reading Isaiah 25.6-9
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
For the word of the Lord Thanks be to God
Psalm 24
1 The earth is the Lord’s and | all that is | in it:
the compass of the | world and those | who | dwell therein.
2 For he has founded it up | on the | seas:
and e-|stablished it up | on the | waters.
3 Who shall ascend the | hill of the | Lord:
or who shall | stand in his | holy | place?
4 Those who have clean hands and a | pure | heart:
who have not set their soul upon idols,
nor | sworn their | oath to a | lie.
5 They shall receive | blessing from the | Lord:
and recompense from the | God of | their sal-|vation.
6 Of such a kind as this are | those who | seek him:
those who seek your | face, O | God of | Jacob.
7 Lift up your heads, O you gates,
and be lifted up, you ever-| lasting doors:
and the King of | glory | shall come | in.
8 Who is the | King of | glory?:
the Lord, strong and mighty, the | Lord | mighty in | battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O you gates,
and be lifted up, ever-| lasting | doors:
and the King of | glory | shall come | in.
10 Who is the | King of | glory?:
the Lord of hosts, | he is the | King of | glory
Glo-| ry to | God; Father | Son and | Holy | Spirit;
As in the be-| ginning so | now; and for-| ever. | A-| men
Second Reading Revelation 21.1-6a
A reading from the book of Revelation
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’
And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.
For the word of the Lord Thanks be to God

The Gospel John 11.32-44
The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
X Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’ But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’ Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, ‘Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, ‘Father, I thank you for having heard me. I know that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.’ When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’

Parish Council Minutes for the month of September and Treasurer’s statement are attached to the hall notice board for your information. It was moved that flower arrangers be given $60 per week towards flowers, as they have been bearing the cost. Flower arrangers please buy the flowers and give us a receipt for your costs – up to $60 each time; Christmas, Easter and our Patronal Festival will of course vary from this budget. If arrangers wish to donate the amount back that is up to the individual and if anyone would like to donate flowers in memory of a loved one, please see the flower arranger for that particular day from the Big Roster. Thank you.
Stephen Thomas is looking for shared accommodation, or a room in which to lodge while he considers his vocation to serve with the Franciscans. If you have a room or know of anyone who has, or you see one advertised within Enmore or the nearby precinct, please let Stephen know - mobile is 0473 164 017 and Stephen has references.
The Christmas Market Facebook is now up and running, so take a look and share it with your friends. We’d like as many “hits” as possible! This is non-cost advertising and we need to take advantage of it. The posters and flyers are available for you to share with your neighbours, family and friends. Please make it known to all you meet and help towards the Market’s success. We are looking for helpers, bakers and raffle ticket sellers!
Our Big Christmas Hamper Guessing Competition – we now have a basket in the church foyer for your contributions to the Christmas Hamper! Anything from a packet of crackers to a bottle of wine would be great.
Our Carpark – please do not park other than in a line marked space. It inconveniences others and causes unnecessary conflict. Please drop off your passengers in the driveway and park in the Edgeware Road Carpark (get your ticket and display) or in the Cypriot Club carpark on Stanmore Road. We only have 13 car parking spaces and 2 disabled spaces; this means most people need to park elsewhere, especially if you are capable of walking more than 100m. Please leave parking spaces for those who are elderly and/or disabled.
Toys’n Tucker – Anglicare – During this month of November we will have boxes in the church foyer to receive your donations of toys and non-perishable food for the Christmas distributions to poor and needy families. The guidelines are basically, no chocolate or chocolate biscuits as they do not last in the heat and no toys should be reliant on batteries.
The Parish is also registered to help with donations of clothing and food when the flood of refugees arrives in Sydney. The Archbishop has set up a website where parishes register their name and what help they can give. More information will be provided later.

Notes from Synod 12- 21 October 2015
Our three Synod Representatives from St Luke’s Fr Philip Bradford, Peter Seymour and Jennie Winton (representing Moya Holle who was overseas) attended the 2nd Session of the 50th Synod, which was opened with a service of Holy Communion in the Cathedral with Archbishop Glenn Davies. The Synod Session was held in the Wesley Conference Centre Pitt Street.
Business Papers were read and dealt with – same sex marriage was a lengthy debate for one whole evening. Bp Forsyth led a debate as to whether or not clergy should remain as authorised marriage celebrants under an amended Marriage Act and recommended that they should do so. Fr James Collins (St Paul’s Burwood) gave a picture of life made up of many mixed couples that came to his church – felt welcomed and included! (Like us!)
Under the current arrangement for Large Property Receipts Policy parishes are required to make a fairly high contribution from sales to the Diocese. This may alter in the future to a smaller contribution on all receipts and service operations, such as income from op shops and the like; say 2%. A proposed ordinance may be introduced in the future.
Yoga and related activities were seen as unsuitable on church and church school properties, as they might attract attention to false gods, which for those of us who participate may seem a little far fetched.
Bishopscourt – no sale as yet has been negotiated.
Anglican Schools Ministry Ordinance – responsibilities of Heads of Schools, School Councils and the Archbishop appointing or possibly dismissing School Chaplains. All proved too difficult and deferred for further consultation and advice.
Synod reaffirmed the Importance of Special Religious Education (Scripture) in public schools.
Synod reaffirmed the Safe Ministry Policy Statement and recommends viewing of the new SafeMinistry.org website – a presentation of the website and current procedures was made.
Synod acknowledged that “the Anglican Diocese of Sydney – (a) continues to publicly repent of and apologise for child abuse suffered within the institutions of the Diocese, and (b) continues to engage with survivors as they come forward, to offer redress that may include (i) an acknowledgement of the abuse, (ii) financial assistance, (iii) provision of specific services including counselling, and (iv) a meaningful personal apology”.
Synod passed the Authorisation of Lay Ministry Ordinance 2015 to replace the Deaconesses, Readers and Other Lay Persons Ordinance 1981, to reflect changes in lay ministry in the Diocese.
Syrian Refugee Crisis: Synod passed a resolution acknowledging the crisis, thanking the Archbishop for his leadership on this issue and encouraged all in the Diocese to continue to pray for the people of the war-torn region, especially those who suffer persecution in the name of Jesus, and to enthusiastically support the fundraising initiatives of Diocesan organisations committed to provide assistance, expertise, resources and facilities towards the needs of the Syrian refugees.
Bishop Robert Forsyth was thanked with acclamation for his ministry over many years at this, his last Synod.
Anyone interested in the details can consult the Synod website where Minutes will appear in due course.
Funeral Planning Form – available from the church office for those who are interested in pre-arranging details.
BEQUESTS
We have benefited greatly in the past from bequests left to the parish by parishioners who have included St Luke’s in their will. Some amounts left to the Parish have been large, some very small; all have been appreciated. The Wardens have elected to retain this capital and generally only use the interest as needed for various projects. If you would like to think about this and include St Luke’s in your will it is one way of ensuring the ongoing maintenance of this extraordinary parish.
St Luke’s Direct Transfer If you want to ensure regular giving to St Luke’s, but find you never have the right amount in cash, or are sometimes unable to attend on Sundays, then St Luke’s Direct Transfer may work for you. Please put your name or the word Offertory as a reference.
