NAIDOC WEEK Is held annually in July from the first Sunday through to the second Sunday.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT NAIDOC STANDS FOR?
On 26 January 1938, while many Australians celebrated 150th anniversary of the landing of the First Fleet, a group of over 1000 Aboriginal people gathered at Australia Hall in Sydney to call for full citizenship status and laws to improve the lives of First Nations people. As one of the first civil rights gatherings in the world, this day became known as the Day of Mourning. Since then, National NAIDOC Week has grown to become both a commemoration of the first Day or Mourning as well as a celebration of the history, culture, and excellence of First Nations people.
This year’s National NAIDOC Week Award Winners were announced at the 2023 National NAIDOC Awards ceremony, held in Meanjin (Brisbane). The 10 award recipients were selected from almost 200 nominations from across the nation. The Person of the Year Award went to Australia’s first Indigenous surgeon, Worimi man, professor Kelvin Kong. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Aunty Dr Naomi Mayers, OAM. Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney said at the Awards Ceremony: “The Awards recognize and celebrate the achievements of all the incredible finalists and nominees.” “This year’s theme, ‘For Our Elders’ is an opportunity to honour our Elders who have worked tirelessly to have the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people heard.
St Luke’s has formed a Local Indigenous History Committee with the aims: 1. Promote Justice for First Nations People; 2. Serve the needs of First Nations People in the Parish boundaries; 3. Broaden the understanding of links between the Parish and First Nations People; 4. Identify significant sites, events people and organisations (past and present) within the Parish boundaries. For information about this Committee contact Tony Brownlow, Coordinator of Lyne Cunneen, Secretary.
