 Welcome to our worship this morning!
At St Luke's we seek to share God's unconditional love and acceptance of all people, regardless of age gender, race, marital or family status, sexual orientation disability or wealth.

 

The Psalmist tells us that those who are neither sinful nor scornful are like trees planted beside streams of water that yield their fruit in due season. It’s a lovely image. May you bear fruit that brings glory to God. 

·          Pray for the courage to avoid all that prevents you from bearing fruit.

·          Pray for the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, the Philippine Independent Church, giving thanks for the work they do to further God’s mission in the world.

The Collect:  

God and Father of all,
you have taught us through your Son that the last shall be first,
and have made a little child the measure of your kingdom:
give us the wisdom from above,

the one who serves is the greatest of all.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

First Reading                                                             Proverbs 31.10-31

A reading from the book of Proverbs

 A capable wife who can find?  She is far more precious than jewels.
 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.
 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.  She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.  She is like the ships of the merchant, she brings her food from far away. She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household  and tasks for her servant-girls.
 She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong.  She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff,  and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all her household are clothed in crimson. She makes herself coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the city gates,
 taking his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them; she supplies the merchant with sashes. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband too, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’ Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain  but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Give her a share in the fruit of her hands,
 and let her works praise her in the city gates.

Second Reading                                                                  James 3.1-12

 

A reading from the letter of James

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water?  Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, ‘The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.’ But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Tuesday 7.30 p.m. 22 September:  Bible Study at Fr Philip & Rosemary’s home at 5 Lincoln Street Stanmore.  If you would like to join them for a meal, please let them know and arrive at 6.45 p.m.  This is the last one for this term.

Wednesday 23 September – Women’s Reading Group meets at 7.30 p.m. at Pauline Newell’s home, 43/1 Coronation St, Petersham. Starting this month we are reading Karen Armstrong’s “Fields of Blood”. If you are interested in joining us please see Ruth or Jo Burton.

Saturday 25 September – Working Bee in the Rectory garden – there’s still lots more to do, so if you can help please come along at 9.00 a.m.

Sunday 4 October – Feast of St Francis of Assisi – Animals will be blessed if managed on a leash, or in a cage, etc. Rosemary Bradford who is a Franciscan Tertiary will be our speaker. There will also be a mime artist for our entertainment in the parish hall.  Bring your friends and pets along.  All welcome!

Saturday 17 October is our Wardens’ Dinner – Indian Style - tickets will be on sale shortly: $30 and $25 conc. and $60 per family.

Sunday 11 October – Christmas Market Meeting after morning tea in the Emmaus Room.

Sunday 18th October - St Luke’s Patronal Festival with our Guest Preacher, the Rev’d Anastasia Webster-Hawes, Rector of Blayney.  There may be some visitors from Bathurst coming and if anyone can provide bed and board for the Saturday night, it would be appreciated;  please see Fr Philip or Ruth.  Anastasia and Don will be staying with Fr Philip and Rosemary.

Saturday 28 November – Our Christmas Market! Time to start baking our Christmas cakes and puddings.

Our ABM Parish Projects for 2015

• ·        Al-Ahli Arab Hospital Gaza (PS001LH); this hospital is the oldest hospital in Gaza City and has 80 beds.  It provides medical and health services to patients regardless of ethnicity religion, political affiliation or economic status.  It serves everybody in the community.
• ·        Wontulp-Bi-Buya Theological College in Cairns (AU003WB); trains indigenous people for ordained ministry and lay-ministry.
• ·        Language, Literacy and Numeracy in Vanuatu VU006EA)

A further cheque for $1406.30 has now been sent to ABM for our projects and $703.15 to Anglicare for Chaplaincy Work.  This money has been calculated from our Opshop income. This makes a total to ABM this year of $7,365.30 towards our nominated projects.

BEQUESTS

We have benefited greatly in the past from bequests left to the parish by parishioners who have included St Luke’s in their will.  Some amounts left to the Parish have been large, some very small; all have been appreciated. The Wardens have elected to retain this capital and generally only use the interest as needed for various projects.  If you would like to think about this and include St Luke’s in your will it is one way of ensuring the ongoing maintenance of this extraordinary parish.

Flower Fund - a flower fund is being set up to ensure that flowers are provided by the parish and not all paid for by individual flower arrangers.  If you would like to donate flowers in memory of loved ones, please put the money in an envelope and mark it “Flower Fund”, with the name of the person and the Sunday you wish the flowers to be included.  A reference to the memorial will then be put in the pew sheet.
