The Reading from Acts captures a moment when the circle of faith was widened. Yet almost in tension with this is the Epistle where we have a blunt dichotomy, those who have the Son have life, those who do not, don’t have life. In the end it is apparently that simple.

Introit Hymn TIS 411.. Filled with the Spirit’s Power
Sentence: Jesus said, ‘You did not choose me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit.’
The Collect:
Loving God
your Son has chosen us
and called us to be his friends:
give us grace to keep his commandments,
to love one another,
and to bear fruit which will abide;
through him who is the true vine,
the source of all life,
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
First Reading Acts 10.44-48
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles
While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?’ So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

Psalm 98
1 O sing to the LORD a | new | song:
for he has | done | marvelous | things;
2 His right hand and his | holy | arm:
they have | got | him the | victory.
3 The Lord has made | known his | sal|vation:
he has revealed his just de|liverance in the | sight of the | nations.
4 He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness towards the | house of | Israel:
;and all the ends of the earth have seen the sal|vation | of our God.
6 Make melody to the Lord up|on the | harp:
upon the harp and | with the | songs of | praise.7 With trumpets | and with | horns:
cry out in triumph be|fore the | LORD the | King.
8 Let the sea roar and | all that | fills it;
the good earth and | those who | live up|on it.
9 Let the rivers | clap their | hands:
and let the mountains ring out to|gether be|fore the | Lord;
Glo|ry to | God; Father | Son and | Holy | Spirit;
As in the be|ginning so | now; and for | ever. | A|men
Second Reading 1 John5.1-12
A reading the first letter of John
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. There are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three agree. If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

The Gospel John 10.7-15
The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
X Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ
All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.
