Introit Hymn 245 We have a gospel to proclaim,
Sentence: Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
The Collect:
Saving God,
Whose Son, Jesus Christ, healed the sick
and brought them wholeness of body and mind:
inspire us, his disciples,
so that we may constantly proclaim his gospel
by our words
and by the dedication and integrity of our lives;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, not and for ever. Amen.
First Reading Isaiah 40:21-31
A reading from book of the prophet Isaiah
Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the
beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he
who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live
in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.
Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the
earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them
off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says
the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who
brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is
great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing.
Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the
Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”? Have you not known? Have you
not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives
power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be
weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall
3
renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run
and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

there is no | measuring . his | under| standing.
6. The Lord re| stores the | humble:
but he brings down the | wicked | to the | dust.
7. O sing to the Lord a | song of | thanksgiving:

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 9.16-23
A reading from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians
If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an
obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do
this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted
with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I
may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the
gospel.
For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so
that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win
Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am
not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those outside the
law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am
under Christ’s law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I
became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all
people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel,
so that I may share in its blessings.

The Gospel Mark 1:29-39
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke
X Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ
As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and
Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a
fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and
lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed
with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured
many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he
would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning,
while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there
he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found
him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go
on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for
that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the
message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Eddie Reddy, Alex Hill, Susan Hill, Lyne Cunneen, Lyn Carrington, Anwyn
Brook-Evans, Janet Widmer and Meaghan Patterson.
THANK YOU!
A sincere thank-you - one and all for a wonderful farewell to Fr Gwilym and Sue;
whether you helped with the cleaning, the flowers, the service, the set-up in the
hall, the food, the clean-up or put-away – many hands were certainly on the go! It
was a great occasion but a sad one and lovely that we had so many visitors. Of
course we will miss them both but we will never forget them.

Marrickville Council said, in June last year that they would change it
to 4 hours on a Sunday. It obviously takes more than six months to
paint new signs!
DINNER FOR CHRISTIANS IN MIDDLE EAST
Last Sunday evening ten St Luke’s parishioners went to a fundraising dinner
sponsored jointly by the NSW Ecumenical Council and a member Church, the
Assyrian Church of the East, whose members come particularly from Iraq, Syria
and Lebanon.
The Assyrian Christian minorities in Iraq and Syria are being persecuted for
their faith by ISIS forces and sometimes forced to flee their homes with only the
clothes on their backs. Whole communities languish in refugee squalor.
The dinner, for about 600 people, was held at a huge Assyrian Church
reception centre behind the cathedral of the Assyrian Church of the East. We
enjoyed delicious food, education via a DVD, and challenging addresses by the
Archbishop of the Church and by Dr Parry, an historian from Macquarie
University.
It is important to support the Christian communities in the Middle East who flee
rather than bow to thuggery and forced conversion.
The generosity of the Assyrian community, supported by the Uniting Church,
Salvation Army and Religious Society of Friends and ourselves, was a potent
example of real solidarity and caring. Leading politicians were there too.
Thousands of dollars were raised.by dinner and raffle tickets, and donations
(including $160 from members of our parish unable to attend.
It was a privilege to be there and the Assyrians were delighted to see us.
Some said they wanted to visit our church!

St Luke’s Enmore, the Living Body of Christ
We are the body of Christ because the Spirit of Christ lives in us. We are
Christ’s eyes and ears, hands and feet wherever we go, alone or two or
three together. At work, at play, at home or on holiday, we are still
members of Christ’s body and we should therefore behave that way.
At St Luke’s there are many groups which work together for the good of
all. Here are some of them.
• Ministers in the Liturgy of the Church, The Sacristan, Lay Deacons,
Servers, Crucifer, Thurifer, Welcomers, Readers, Intercessors
• The Thai Community, with Mac Maitree, our Thai Pastor and about 30
members who meet together at various times and places.
• The Indian Community, centred around the extended Reddy Family at
Liverpool, meeting for prayer and worship every Friday.
• The Pastoral Care Group, set up to care for those who miss church and
to take Home Communion to those who need it.
• The Children’s Ministry and Sunday School. Encouraging God’s
children to take their place in the church’s life and ministry.
• Advent and Lenten Study Groups, working with St Joseph’s catholic
parish to learn more about the Scriptures and our faith
• The Wardens and Parish Council. The business part of the church,
working with the Diocese and setting strategies for the future.
• Musicians and Singers to help us “make a joyful noise unto the Lord”
• The Committee of the Op Shop and the community of Op Shop helpers.
Working with the community to help those who need it and raising
money for the mission and work of the church.
• The Boyz Nite Out. Regular fellowship and good Food building
friendships and faith.
• The Women’s Reading Group. A monthly meeting for reflection and
fellowship.
• Gardeners, Flower arrangers and Cleaners. Making our worship and
fellowship spaces a pleasant place to be.
