Introit Hymn TIS .    Christ is made the sure foundation

1
Christ is made the sure foundation,
Christ the head and cornerstone,
chosen by the Lord, and precious,
binding all the church in one,
holy Zion's help for ever,
and her confidence alone.
2
All that dedicated city,
dearly loved by God on high,
in exultant jubilation
pours perpetual melody,
God the Three in One adoring,
praising Him eternally.
3
Here among us, where we call you
come, O Lord our God, today;
with your gentle loving kindness
hear your people as we pray,
and your fullest benediction
pour upon us here today.
4
Here bestow on all your people
what we ask of you to gain,
what we gain from you for ever
with the blessèd to retain,
and hereafter in your glory
evermore with you to reign.
5
Praise and honour to the Father,
praise and honour to the Son,
praise and honour to the Spirit,
ever Three and ever One,
one in might and one in glory
while eternal ages run.

First Reading                                                                                      2 Samuel 11:26-12:10,13

A reading from the Second book of Samuel

When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she grieved for him. When the mourning was over, David brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son and the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, ‘There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little lamb, which he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and his children; it used to eat of his food and drink from his cup, and lie in his lap, and it was like a child to him.
Now there came a traveller to the rich man, and he was not willing to take one of his own flock or herd, to prepare for the visitor who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come. Then David’s anger was great against the man. He said to Nathan, ‘As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.’
Nathan said to David, ‘You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul; I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives , and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more. Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, for you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. And David said to Nathan I have sinned against the Lord.

For the word of the Lord                                                  Thanks be to God

2 Wash me thoroughly | from my | wickedness:
and | cleanse me | from my |  sin.
3 For I acknowledge | my re-| bellion:

Second Reading                                                                     Ephesians 4:1-16

A reading from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.  But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said, ‘When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people.’  (When it says, ‘He ascended’, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.)
The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

For the word of the Lord                                                   Thanks be to God

Hymn TIS 429 – Break thou the bread of life

Break now the bread of life, Dear Lord, to me,
As once you broke the loaves beside the sea;
beyond the sacred page I seek you Lord,
My spirit longs for you, O living Word.
Bless your own truth, dear Lord, to me, to me
as when you blessed the bread by Galilee;
Then shall all bondage cease, all shackles fall,
and I shall find my peace, my all in all.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia,
No one lives on | bread a-| lone,
but on every word that | comes from the | mouth of | God.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia,

The Gospel                                                           John 6:24-35

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
X Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ

So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’  Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.  Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’  Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’  So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’  They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’  Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

For the Gospel of the Lord                                   Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

The Sermon – Bishop Robert Forsyth

Hymn after Sermon:   TIS 432 O Jesus, I have promised

1. O Jesus, I have promised
to serve you to the end:
Lord be for ever near me,
my Master and my friend;
I shall not fear the battle
if you are by my side,
nor wander from the pathway
if you will be my guide.

2. Still let me feel you near me!
The world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle,
and tempting sounds I hear;
my foes are ever near me,
around me and within;
but Jesus, draw me nearer,
and shield my soul from sin.

3. O let me hear you speaking
in accents clear and still,
above the storms of passion,
the murmurs of self-will;
Lord speak to reassure me,
to chasten or control;
O speak, and make me listen,
True guardian of my soul.

4. Lord, let me see your footmarks,
and in them plant my own;
that I may follow boldly
and in your strength alone.
O guide me, call me, draw me,
uphold me to the end;
and then in heaven receive me,
my Savior and my Friend.

Hymn:  TIS 398 Come down, O Love divine

1
*Come down, O Love divine,
seek now this soul of mine,
and visit it with your own ardour glowing;
O Comforter, draw near,
within my heart appear
and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing.
2
There let it freely burn,
till earthly passions turn
to dust and ashes, in its heat consuming;
and let your glorious light
shine ever on my sight
and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.
3
Let holy charity
my outer garment be,
and lowliness become my inner clothing:
true lowliness of heart,
which takes the humbler part
and for its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.
4
And so the yearning strong
with which the soul will long
shall far outpass the power of human telling;
for none can guess its grace
till we become the place
in which the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

Final Hymn:  TIS 531 – Sent Forth by God’s Blessing

Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,
the people of God from His dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended, Oh, now be extended
the fruits of this service in all who believe.
The seed of His teaching, receptive souls reaching,
shall blossom in action for God and for all.
His grace did invite us, His love shall unite us
to work for God’s kingdom and answer His call.

2. With praise and thanksgiving, to God ever living,
the tasks of our everyday life we will face.
Our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,
embracing His children of each tribe and race.
With Your feast You feed us, with Your light now lead us;
unite us as one in this life that we share.
Then may all the living with praise and thanksgiving
give honor to Christ and His name that we bear.
