Special Thanks to Kathy Drummond and Brett Davies for arranging our Young Organist Recital Series!
Despite repeated delays due to the implications and restrictions caused by Covid, the first recital finally happened last Sunday; featuring Samuel Giddy who is a remarkable young performer!
Sam played a wide repertoire of organ music composed over the centuries, on our Wordsworth & Maskell Pipe Organ and his technical skill and artistic performance had us mesmerised. He spoke to each piece with intimate understanding and wit. Sam didn’t start learning the organ until 2011 and amazingly gained his Licentiate [in organ] with distinction at age 15! He is described as one of the finest young musicians of his generation. Having performed in competitions in Germany and played at recitals in various cathedrals throughout England, he is currently assisting at St Andrew’s Cathedral, has recently been appointed music minister (part time) at St John’s, Darlinghurst, where he will be playing and coordinating music at two Sunday services and assisting in outreach to the community through music. He is re-establishing the choir and organ music for the services.
There were about 45 in the audience, which while not a great number, they were nonetheless a very enthusiastic and appreciative audience. Glasses of Prosecco, tea, coffee and platters of food followed the performance, and this hospitality was also much appreciated.
Thank you to all those who came, served or chatted with our visitors and helped afterwards. There were some at the performance who had responded to our social media advertising, so we will certainly do more of that next time.
The next recital will probably be held in November in conjunction with the St. Anmorè Music Festival. Watch this space!
